Admission requirements

A senior secondary qualification recognised as equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate. Domestic school leavers are ranked by their ATAR through the state admissions centre (UAC in NSW/ACT, VTAC in Victoria, QTAC in Queensland, SATAC in SA/NT, TISC in WA); international applicants are assessed against the recognised equivalent of their own qualification and may enter through a foundation year, a diploma pathway or with credit from prior study. Postgraduate entry normally requires a relevant bachelor’s degree, with a weighted average mark or GPA threshold and, for some programmes, professional experience or a portfolio.

Language: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.

1. 1Choose a CRICOS-registered course and check its intake — most Australian degrees start in Semester 1 (late February/March) and Semester 2 (July), with some providers adding a November trimester.

5. 5Take out Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the length of your stay, then lodge a Student visa (subclass 500) application with the Department of Home Affairs, meeting the Genuine Student requirement and evidencing the current financial capacity amount.
