The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) First Nations Scholarship at James Cook University is aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who are studying full-time. The RBA, Australia's central bank, provides this scholarship in partnership with JCU to encourage more Indigenous Australians to enter fields such as economics, commerce, finance, and related disciplines. By supporting these students, the RBA hopes to see more First Nations professionals enter influential roles, both in the financial sector and beyond.
This scholarship provides more than just financial help; it often includes mentoring and the chance to connect with professionals from the RBA. Recipients may gain insights about central banking, economic policy, and real-world applications of what they're learning in lectures and tutorials. It's well suited to students who are passionate about economic justice, who want stable career options, and who are open to placements or internships that can lead to further employment opportunities.
The program suits Indigenous students at JCU who have an interest in economics, finance, commerce, or similar areas. It supports studies at both undergraduate and occasionally honours levels. Students who bring community perspective to their studies, or who hope to use their qualification to make positive changes in their communities, are especially encouraged. Mature-aged and school-leaver applicants are both welcome.
If you are moving to Australia to study at JCU and want to apply for this scholarship as an international student, you'll first need to secure admission and a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the university. This document is necessary for the Australian Student Visa (subclass 500) application process. However, eligibility is usually limited to students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, so most recipients will be Australian citizens. Everyone should check these details with JCU's scholarships office because requirements can change.
