About this program

This is a five-year double degree that pairs information systems with law, and it finishes with honours. You graduate with two qualifications: a Bachelor of Information Systems and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours). Western Sydney University runs it as a full-time course, and the honours component is built into the law side rather than added on as a separate year.

The information systems half covers how organisations use technology, databases, systems analysis and design, business processes, project work, and the management side of IT. The law half is the standard law curriculum you need for admission to practice: contracts, torts, criminal law, constitutional law, property, equity, evidence, and procedure. Because it is a double degree, the two halves are studied together across the five years, and the law component is accredited for admission to legal practice in Australia. That accreditation is what lets graduates apply for a practising certificate after completing practical legal training.

Australian bachelor degrees are normally three years full-time, and honours usually adds a fourth. A double degree runs longer because you complete the requirements of both awards. Teaching is organised by semester or trimester depending on the unit, and you enrol in units of study that carry credit points. You need to pass the required credit points in each degree to graduate. The law honours component includes a research thesis or major research project, which is where you learn to find a legal problem, work through the cases and legislation, and write it up properly. Work-integrated learning is part of the law degree, clinical legal placements, internships with firms, community legal centres, government agencies, or in-house legal teams, and the information systems side typically includes a capstone or industry project. Placement is a normal part of legal training in Australia, not an optional extra.

You finish with two sets of skills that employers actually want together: you can read a contract, a statute, or a privacy policy and understand what it means, and you can also work out what a system does with the data. That combination suits people who want to work in technology law, privacy and data protection, cyber security governance, fintech, or legal operations, and it also suits anyone who wants to be a lawyer with real technical literacy. It is a demanding five years. If you are not sure about law but like the technology side, a single information systems degree may be a better fit. Check the official Western Sydney University page and the CRICOS register for current unit details, English requirements, and fees.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
