About this program

The Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast is a three-year degree built around the core of computing: programming, data structures and algorithms, software engineering, networks, databases and the maths that holds it all together. You will write code from early in the degree, not just read about it. Later units let you specialise in areas such as software development, data science, cybersecurity or games and interactive media, depending on what the university offers in a given trimester.

How the degree is structured

Australian bachelor degrees are made up of units of study, each worth a set number of credit points. A standard full-time load is eight units a year, and you need to pass a required number of credit points to graduate. Most USC degrees run on a trimester calendar, which means three study periods a year instead of two. That can let you fast-track your degree or spread your load if you are working. The degree usually finishes with a capstone project where you build a real software system or work on a research problem with an academic supervisor.

Work-integrated learning

Computer science at USC includes work-integrated learning. That might be an industry placement, an internship with a tech company or a project for a real client. The Sunshine Coast has a growing tech sector, and Brisbane is close enough for placements and graduate roles. You will also build a portfolio of code you can show employers, which matters more in this field than a transcript alone.

What you will learn

By the end you should be able to design and build software, work in a team using version control and agile methods, analyse data, and understand how networks and operating systems fit together. You will also cover professional practice: ethics, security, and how to communicate technical ideas to people who are not programmers. The degree is accredited by the Australian Computer Society, which matters if you want to work as an ICT professional in Australia or have your qualification recognised overseas.

Who it suits

This degree suits people who like solving problems and building things. You do not need to have coded before you start, but you do need to be comfortable with maths and logic. It also suits students who want a qualification that leads to a job in a field with strong demand. International students should check the English requirements: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for undergraduate courses, though some courses ask for more. The Student visa also has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official page for current details.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
