The Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) at Torrens University Australia is a four-year degree that trains you to work as a naturopath. You study the biomedical sciences first, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology, then build on that with naturopathic subjects: herbal medicine, nutritional medicine, homeopathy, and the principles of naturopathic practice. Later years cover clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, and case management, so you can take a patient history, order and interpret pathology tests, and put together a treatment plan safely alongside conventional care.
The degree is structured as a bachelor's qualification at AQF level 7. Australian bachelor degrees normally run three years, but this one is four because it includes a substantial clinical component. You complete units of study across trimesters or semesters, each worth credit points, and you need to pass the required number of credit points to graduate. The later part of the course includes supervised clinical practice in a teaching clinic, where you see real patients under the guidance of qualified practitioners. That clinical placement is what makes the four-year length necessary, you cannot register as a naturopath in Australia without it.
Skills you come away with include taking a full case history, physical examination, interpreting blood tests and other investigations, prescribing herbal and nutritional formulations, and knowing when to refer a patient to a GP or specialist. You also learn about running a practice, record keeping, privacy, informed consent, and the professional and ethical standards expected of a registered health practitioner. Communication matters as much as the science; naturopaths spend a lot of time talking with patients about diet, lifestyle and what they can realistically change.
This course suits people who are interested in health, natural medicine and working directly with patients, and who want a science-based qualification rather than a short course. It also suits those already working in health or wellness who want to formalise their knowledge. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. Entry requires English proficiency, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual undergraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 099643B. Check the official page for current entry requirements, intake dates and fees.
Australian industries that hire naturopathy graduates include private allied health clinics, integrative medicine practices, community health organisations, the complementary medicines industry, health food and supplement retail, wellness tourism, and corporate health and wellbeing programmes.
It typically takes 4 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
