The Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run teams, projects and business units. It sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, so it is shorter and more hands-on than a bachelor degree. The course runs for 49 weeks and is delivered by The Wales Institute. Units cover the usual management territory: leading and managing teams, developing business plans, managing budgets and financial plans, implementing operational plans, and managing risk. You also look at workplace relationships, performance management, and how to communicate with influence. Assessment is competency-based, which means you are judged on whether you can do the task to a workplace standard, not on a percentage mark.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency. Each unit has a national code and a credit value, and you need to complete all the core units plus a set number of electives to graduate. Delivery is usually face-to-face, often in blocks or on a set timetable across the 49 weeks. Some providers run the course over two or three study periods. You will spend time in a classroom or workshop, and you may be asked to complete projects based on real or simulated workplaces. There is no research thesis at this level. The final part of the course often pulls the units together into a project where you plan and manage an operational or strategic activity from start to finish.
By the end, you should be able to write a business plan, prepare and monitor a budget, lead a team through a change, manage a difficult performance conversation, and report on operational results. You also practise the softer side of management: giving feedback, resolving conflict, and keeping a team focused on targets. These are the skills employers ask for when they promote someone into their first supervisory or coordinator role. The course does not lead to a professional registration, because management is not a registered profession in Australia. Instead, it gives you a recognised qualification you can take to an employer or use as a pathway into further study.
This course suits people already working in a team leader or supervisor role who want formal recognition, and people with some work experience who are stepping up into management for the first time. It also suits international students who want a shorter Australian qualification before returning home or applying for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, if they meet the visa requirements. While you study, a student visa generally lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight. The Wales Institute publishes the tuition fee on the CRICOS register, so check the official course page for the current amount, entry requirements and start dates. International applicants need to show English proficiency. The published standard for courses at this level is IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, which is separate from the institute's entry requirement. Confirm the details on the official page before you apply.
These roles are found across most Australian industries, including retail, health and community services, construction, transport and logistics, hospitality, government administration and professional services. The qualification also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in business or management, with credit for prior study decided by the receiving institution.
It typically takes 49 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
