The Graduate Diploma of Music at The Australian Institute of Music is a one-and-a-half-year course for people who already have a music degree or solid professional experience and want to sharpen their craft at a postgraduate level. You'll spend most of your time in practical study, performance, composition, arranging, production or music business, depending on the direction you take. The aim is to take you from capable to confident, with a body of work you can actually use.
Australian graduate diplomas sit at AQF level 8, between a bachelor degree and a master's. They're coursework qualifications, usually made up of eight units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, delivered over three trimesters or two semesters across 18 months. At AIM, the emphasis is on studio and stage time rather than lecture halls. You'll work on individual projects, collaborate with other musicians, and finish with a capstone project, a recital, an album, a portfolio of compositions or a research paper, depending on your specialisation. Assessment is mostly practical: performances, recordings, written reflections and peer review.
Work-integrated learning is built into the music industry, and AIM uses its connections to put students in real settings, recording studios, live venues, festivals, arts organisations and teaching studios. You might assist on a professional session, manage a small tour, or run a community music workshop. These placements are where you learn how the industry actually operates: contracts, royalties, rehearsal schedules, grant applications, the lot. It's not just about playing well; it's about building a sustainable career.
This course suits three kinds of people: recent music graduates who want more specialised training before entering the workforce, established musicians who need formal credentials for teaching or visa purposes, and career-changers with strong practical skills who want to fill gaps in theory or business knowledge. The Australian music scene is small and interconnected, so the contacts you make during the diploma often matter as much as the qualification itself. International students should note that the Student visa allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during study, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English requirements are IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall for this level, with equivalents accepted. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for current fees and intake dates.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$34,613 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
