The Bachelor of Health Science (Exercise) at The Australian College of Physical Education is a three-year degree for students who want to work in exercise and health promotion. You study how the body responds to physical activity, how to assess fitness and movement, and how to design exercise programmes for people with different needs and goals. The course sits in the public health subject area, so it looks beyond the gym floor at how physical activity shapes population health, chronic disease prevention and community wellbeing.
Like most Australian bachelor degrees, it runs over three years of full-time study, usually across two semesters each year. You complete units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and build up the credit points needed to graduate. Early units cover anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and exercise prescription. Later units move into health promotion, behaviour change, exercise for clinical populations and research methods. Many programmes of this kind finish with a capstone unit or research project where you bring your skills together on a real question in exercise and health.
Exercise science is a hands-on field, so expect laboratory work, fitness testing sessions and supervised practical experience. Work-integrated learning or professional placement is common in this area, and it is where you apply what you have learned in a workplace setting such as a community health service, fitness centre, rehabilitation clinic or school. Placement hours also matter if you later seek accreditation with an Australian exercise or sports science body, so check the current requirements with the College and the accrediting organisation.
You graduate able to assess health and fitness, prescribe safe exercise, communicate with clients and communities, and read and apply research evidence. The degree suits school leavers and mature-age students who enjoy sport, health and working with people, and who want a qualification that leads to registration or accreditation pathways in exercise. It also works as a stepping stone to further study in physiotherapy, public health, clinical exercise physiology or teaching. International students should note that a Student visa allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English proficiency is required; check the College's published requirements and confirm current details on the official page.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$97,680 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
