The Diploma of Remedial Massage at TAFE Queensland trains you to assess and treat soft tissue problems, muscles, tendons, ligaments and connective tissue, using hands-on techniques. You study anatomy and physiology, how the body moves, and how to take a client history and run a physical assessment. Then you learn the treatment methods themselves: Swedish massage, deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, joint mobilisation and stretching. You also cover the business side, because most remedial massage therapists are either self-employed or working in a small clinic.
The diploma runs 51 weeks. TAFE Queensland delivers it through a mix of classroom theory and supervised practice in a student clinic, where you work on real clients under the eye of a qualified therapist. That clinic time is how you build the hours and confidence you need before you go out on your own. Assessment is practical as much as written, you have to show you can do the work, not just describe it.
What you come out with is the ability to run a treatment from start to finish: interview the client, figure out what is going on, choose the right technique, apply it safely, and give the client something to do at home. You also learn when to refer someone on, to a physiotherapist, a GP or another health professional, because remedial massage has clear boundaries. The diploma sits at the same AQF level as other Australian diplomas, which means it is a vocational qualification built around job-ready skills rather than academic research.
This course suits people who want to work with their hands and are comfortable with close physical contact with clients. It also suits existing massage therapists who want to move from relaxation massage into clinical treatment, and people changing careers from office or trade work. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while you study, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available to you after you finish, depending on your circumstances. Check the official CRICOS listing for current tuition and intake details.
Employers in Australia include private massage and allied health clinics, sports organisations, aged care and disability providers, and hospitality and tourism businesses with spa facilities. Some graduates go on to further study in health science, physiotherapy or myotherapy.
