The Diploma of Graphic Design at TAFE Queensland is a practical, studio-based qualification that runs for 51 weeks. You will spend most of your time making things: designing logos and brand identities, laying out posters, packaging, magazines and digital campaigns, working with type, colour and image, and building a portfolio you can show employers or clients. Expect to learn the software the industry actually uses, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, alongside the thinking behind good design: research, concept development, critique and presentation.
This is a vocational qualification, not a university degree. It sits at the diploma level and is delivered as a set of units of study, each with credit points, across the year. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you are graded on whether you can do the task to industry standard, not on a bell curve. If you later want a degree, many Australian universities give credit for diploma study, so you may be able to enter a bachelor programme with some units already counted. Check the specific pathway with the university you have in mind.
TAFE Queensland teaches in studios and computer labs, and the diploma includes work-integrated learning, live briefs for real clients, industry projects and sometimes a placement with a design studio, advertising agency or in-house creative team. That is the part employers ask about in interviews. You finish with a folio, a resume and a sense of how a studio actually runs: deadlines, client feedback, print specs and file handover.
Who it suits: school leavers who want a job-ready design qualification without a three-year degree, career changers who have been designing on the side, and people already working in print, marketing or social media who need formal skills. International students should note that studying in Australia on a Student visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS page.
These roles appear across Australia in creative agencies, publishing, manufacturing, retail and the public sector. Some graduates go on to further study in graphic design or visual communication at bachelor level.
It typically takes 51 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,800 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
