About this program

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You will study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, and how to keep children safe, healthy and included. Expect practical units on child development, observation and assessment, working with families, legal and ethical requirements, and responding to children with additional needs. You will also learn the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework, which set the rules and expectations for every early childhood service in Australia.

This is an AQF diploma, so it sits above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree. It is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two or three study periods rather than the longer semesters you see in a three-year degree. You will complete a set of units of study, each with a credit point value, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. There is a practical placement component because you cannot learn to work with young children from a textbook. Placement is done in a registered early childhood service under supervision, and you will be assessed on the job as well as in class. Some providers build a final project or portfolio into the last study period, where you show what you can do across the whole qualification.

Skills you pick up include planning and running group experiences for different ages, writing observations and learning stories, talking with families about their child's progress, following child protection and workplace health and safety rules, and working as part of a team in a busy centre. You will also practise inclusive practice, so you can support children with disabilities or from different cultural and language backgrounds. The course suits school leavers, career changers, and people already working in childcare who want to move into a room leader or educator role with a formal qualification.

International students in Australia can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and after finishing you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. English requirements for entry are usually IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, though teaching and care courses sometimes ask for higher. Always check the official CRICOS listing and the college's own page for the exact tuition, intake dates, placement hours and English evidence accepted.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.

Career outcomes

These roles are found across Australia in privately run and community-managed childcare centres, kindergartens, family day care schemes, and school holiday programmes.
