The Diploma of Community Services is a two-year qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities in Australia. You'll learn how to assess client needs, plan and deliver support, run group work, advocate for people dealing with housing, income, family or health issues, and keep the paperwork that community organisations depend on. Expect units in case management, counselling skills, legal and ethical requirements, working with culturally diverse clients, and responding to critical incidents. Assessment is mostly practical: simulated client interviews, case notes, group projects and supervised work placement.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each carrying credit points. At Sydney College of Professional Education the diploma runs over two years, usually across semesters, with a mix of classroom teaching, tutorials and workplace hours. Because community services is a hands-on field, work-integrated learning is a core part of the qualification, you'll complete a supervised placement in an agency such as a neighbourhood centre, family support service, homelessness service or multicultural organisation, where you work with real clients under a qualified supervisor. There is no research thesis at diploma level; the capstone is your placement plus a final project that pulls together the skills you've built.
By the end you should be able to conduct an intake interview, write a case plan, refer clients to the right services, work within privacy and duty-of-care rules, de-escalate conflict, and communicate with people from many backgrounds. You'll also learn how to look after yourself in a job where burnout is common, and how to work in a team alongside social workers, counsellors and health staff.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a practical start in the sector, mature-age students changing careers, and support workers already employed in community organisations who want a formal qualification. It also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in social work or community services, with credit for the units you've completed, if you decide to keep studying. International students should check the official CRICOS page for current tuition, intake dates and English requirements, social work and community services courses often ask for IELTS 7.0 or higher, so confirm the exact score before you apply. While studying in Australia on a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$32,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
