The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader or supervisor roles, or who already hold one and want to do it better. You study how to plan and manage a team's work, lead people through change, manage budgets and operational plans, and handle the kind of workplace problems that don't come with a neat answer. Assessment is practical: you work through scenarios, case studies and projects drawn from real organisations, not just exams.
As an Australian diploma, it sits at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. That means it's shorter and more hands-on than a bachelor degree, which normally runs three years, and it's built around units of study rather than majors. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to pass the set number of units to graduate. Providers usually deliver diplomas over two or three study periods a year, so you can finish in twelve months of full-time study or stretch it out part-time. There is no honours year and no thesis at this level; the capstone is normally a practical project where you apply what you've learned to a workplace problem.
You'll pick up skills that transfer straight to the job: writing operational plans, allocating work and monitoring performance, giving feedback, running meetings, managing a budget, and understanding your obligations under Australian workplace law. Some providers build in a work placement or industry project, which is where a lot of the real learning happens. If you're already working, ask whether your current role can count towards the practical components.
This course suits two groups. First, someone with a few years on the tools who's been asked to lead a team and wants some structure before they learn by trial and error. Second, an international student looking for a shorter, cheaper entry point into Australian business study, with the option to pathway into a bachelor degree later and possibly get credit for the units you've completed. English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, though check the exact requirement for this course. On a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours a fortnight while studying, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Confirm fees, intake dates and entry requirements on the official CRICOS listing and with the college directly.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
