The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run the show in hotels, restaurants, events and tourism businesses. You learn how to manage a venue, not just work in one: rostering and staffing, budgeting and cost control, food and beverage operations, front office, marketing, and the legal side of serving alcohol and keeping customers safe. Assessment is largely hands-on. You complete service periods in a commercial kitchen or restaurant, handle real customer interactions, and build a portfolio of operational documents, rosters, budgets, incident reports, that you can show an employer.
This diploma sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework. It runs 1.5 years full time, which means roughly three semesters of study. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass all core units plus your electives to graduate. There is no research thesis at this level. Instead, the final stage usually brings the units together in a capstone-style project where you plan and cost a hospitality operation from scratch, or complete a supervised work placement in a venue. Some providers arrange industry placements with hotels, catering companies or clubs; check with Sydney City College of Management about what is available and whether placement hours are part of your units.
You will study how to manage stock and suppliers, read a profit and loss statement, set prices, and deal with staffing problems. You learn the rules that apply in Australia, responsible service of alcohol, food safety, work health and safety, and fair work obligations. Customer service, team leadership and complaint handling come up in almost every unit because they are what the job demands. By the end, you should be able to step into a shift supervisor or duty manager role and keep a venue running through a busy service.
This is a good fit if you already work in hospitality and want to move into supervision, or if you are starting out and want a qualification that gets you working quickly. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification and some post-study work experience. The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your visa situation and the course duration. While you study, your student visa generally lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight. English proficiency is required for entry, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm all entry requirements, unit details and placement arrangements on the official Sydney City College of Management page or the CRICOS listing for course 110440E.
These roles are found across Australia in hotels, resorts, clubs, restaurants, catering firms, event businesses and tourism operators. Some graduates use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, with credit for prior study.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
