The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a practical qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or front-line management roles, or who are already in one and want formal recognition of what they can do. It's a diploma, so it sits above a certificate IV and below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework. You don't need a degree to get in, and you don't come out with one, what you come out with is a set of management skills you can apply on the job straight away.
The course is built around units of study, each with a set credit point value, and you'll typically complete them over three or four study periods across the 1.5 years. The units cover the things a new manager has to deal with: leading a team, managing your own performance and that of others, workplace communication, operational planning, managing budgets and financial plans, and dealing with conflict. You'll also look at risk management, continuous improvement and how to support innovation in a team. Assessment is mostly practical, case studies, role plays, projects and written tasks based on real workplace scenarios, rather than long exams.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered in semesters or trimesters, and this one is no different. Each unit is assessed on its own, and you build up credit points as you go. Because the qualification is competency-based, you need to demonstrate that you can actually perform the tasks, not just write about them. Some providers offer work-integrated learning or a placement component, so you may spend time in an organisation applying what you've learned. If placement is part of your course, the provider will arrange it and tell you what's required. There's no research thesis at diploma level, that's for master's and doctoral students.
This diploma suits people who are already working and want to move up, or who have some industry experience and want a formal management qualification without committing to a three-year degree. It's also a pathway: if you finish the diploma and want to keep going, many Australian institutions give you credit towards a bachelor degree in business or management. International students should know that while you study, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Check the current rules on the Department of Home Affairs website.
International applicants need to show English proficiency. The common standard for coursework programs is IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work ask for 7.0–7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Student visa has its own English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs, separate from the course entry requirement. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official page for the exact figure and confirm all details with the provider before you apply.
These roles exist across Australia in almost every industry. The diploma is recognised by employers as evidence that you can manage people and operations, and it can count towards further study if you decide to do a bachelor degree later.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
