The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or front-line management roles, or who already hold one and want the paperwork to go with it. You study how organisations actually run: how to plan and monitor work for a team, manage budgets and financial plans, lead and develop people, build relationships with clients and stakeholders, and handle the operational problems that land on a manager's desk. Assessment is competency-based, which means you are judged on whether you can do the task to workplace standard, not on how you rank against your classmates.
Delivery is a full-time year, and like most Australian diplomas it is broken into units of study rather than a semester-by-semester lecture block. Each unit carries credit points and covers one cluster of skills, so you build the qualification unit by unit. Where the college arranges it, some units include a work placement or a simulated workplace project so you can practise leading a real team and gather evidence from it. Because this sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, it is a shorter, more practical qualification than a bachelor degree, which normally runs three years; it also gives you a pathway into further study, and completed units may count as credit towards a degree at a partner institution if you want to keep going.
What you gain is practical: writing an operational plan, running a meeting that ends with decisions, reading a budget and explaining the numbers to your team, giving feedback that people accept, and dealing with a performance issue before it becomes a resignation. You also learn the compliance side of management, workplace health and safety duties, equal opportunity, and the record-keeping that sits behind every staffing decision. These are the things employers ask about in interviews, and the units are written so you can point to evidence of having done them.
This course suits three groups of people. First, someone already working in retail, hospitality, logistics, aged care or an office who has been given a team and wants formal recognition. Second, a school leaver or career changer who wants a fast, work-focused qualification rather than a three-year degree. Third, an international student looking for a shorter Australian qualification with a clear pathway. If you are coming from overseas, you will need to meet the college's English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall is the usual standard for coursework at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both. A Student visa allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
