The Diploma of Civil Construction Design is a one-year qualification for people who want to work on the design side of civil construction, roads, drainage, subdivisions, retaining structures and the like. You learn to turn an engineer's concept into drawings, specifications and documentation that a construction team can actually build from. That means plenty of time in CAD, producing detailed drawings, setting out plans, and learning how civil works are documented to Australian standards.
As an Australian diploma, this sits at AQF level 5 and is delivered over one year, typically across two semesters. You'll study a set of core units covering civil drafting, structural detailing, materials, surveying and site investigation, plus electives that let you lean towards roads and drainage or towards structures. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to pass the lot to graduate. Assessment is mostly practical, drawings, projects, reports, rather than long written exams.
Expect a strong hands-on component. Many diplomas in this field include a work placement or a simulated project where you work to a real brief, often with input from local civil contractors or councils. Skyline Institute of Technology's version follows that pattern, with project work that mirrors what you'd do in a drafting office. You'll finish with a portfolio of drawings and documentation you can show an employer.
This course suits school leavers who like technical drawing and want a fast route into the industry, as well as tradespeople and site staff who want to move into design or estimating. It's also a common pathway into a bachelor degree in civil engineering or construction management, with credit for the units you've completed. International students should check the CRICOS register for current tuition and confirm English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual standard, and you'll also need to meet the Department of Home Affairs' separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and on completion you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
Employers include civil engineering consultancies, road and drainage contractors, land developers, local government, and state road and transport agencies. The diploma also gives you credit towards further study in civil engineering or construction management at bachelor level.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
