The Diploma of Emergency Health Care is a practical qualification for people who want to work on the front line of emergency response. You study how the body works and what goes wrong in a trauma or medical emergency, then learn the skills to assess a patient, manage an airway, control bleeding, provide CPR and use an automated external defibrillator. Units cover infection control, safe manual handling, oxygen therapy, and how to communicate with patients, families and other responders when things are moving fast. You also learn the legal and ethical side of emergency care in Australia, consent, duty of care, and your scope of practice as a diploma-qualified clinician.
The course runs for 1.5 years. Like other Australian diplomas, it is built from units of study, each with a set credit point value, and delivered across trimesters or semesters. Assessment is a mix of theory and hands-on practicals. You practise on manikins and simulated patients in a skills lab, then go out on supervised clinical placements with ambulance services, hospitals or community health providers. That placement is where you put the skills together under pressure, with a qualified clinician watching and giving feedback.
You finish with the ability to take a handover, work in a team, and keep your cool when a patient deteriorates. Employers in Australia look for people who can follow protocols, document clearly, and speak plainly to people who are frightened. The diploma gives you a recognised credential at AQF diploma level, which sits between a certificate and a bachelor degree. If you later want to go further, some universities offer credit towards a bachelor degree in paramedicine or health science, based on the units you have completed.
This course suits school leavers who want to start working in health care without committing to a full degree, and mature-age students moving from another job into emergency services. It also works for people already in the field, patient transport officers, first aid trainers, defence medics, or event health staff, who want a formal qualification. International students should check the official CRICOS listing for the current tuition and intake details, and confirm English requirements before applying. The Student visa lets you work up to 48 hours a fortnight while you study, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) may give you post-study work rights if you meet the requirements.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$22,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
