The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and develop, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe, and how to work with families and other staff. The course mixes classroom study with time in a real service, so you practise what you learn with children, not just read about it.
Australian diplomas are made up of units of study, each with a set credit point value. Most students take a full-time load across two semesters, though some providers run trimesters or let you spread the course over a longer period. The units build from child development and health and safety through to curriculum planning, behaviour guidance, and working legally and ethically in the sector. Because this is a diploma, the focus is practical: you learn the National Quality Framework, the Early Years Learning Framework, and how to document children's learning against those standards. You also complete a professional placement in a registered early childhood service, which is how you build the hours and evidence you need for your qualification to count.
Skills you come away with include observing and recording children's development, designing experiences that match where each child is at, managing a room, communicating with families, and meeting workplace health and safety and child protection obligations. You also learn to work within a team and follow service policies. Providers usually expect you to hold a Working with Children Check before placement, and you will need to meet English requirements if you are an international applicant. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a hands-on start in early childhood, career changers moving into education, and people already working in services who need a formal qualification to move into a room leader or lead educator role. It also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education, often with credit for the units you have completed, if you decide to go on to teaching. International students can study on a Student visa, work up to 48 hours per fortnight while the course is running, and may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after graduating. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official course page for entry requirements, placement arrangements, and unit details before you apply.
Most graduates work in the early childhood education and care sector, which employs people across Australia in private, community, and not-for-profit services. Some move into school support roles or family services. The diploma meets the qualification level for many educator positions under the National Quality Framework, but always check the specific role requirements with the employer.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$11,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
