The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Procurement is a short, focused qualification for people who buy things on behalf of an organisation and want to do it better. Over one year of study, you look at how procurement decisions get made: sourcing, supplier selection and management, contract negotiation, cost and risk analysis, and the ethics and governance that sit around public and private spending. It suits someone already working in purchasing, contracts, supply or project support who wants a formal credential without committing to a full master's degree.
As a graduate certificate, this sits at AQF Level 8, above a bachelor degree, below a master's. It is made up of a small number of units of study, each carrying credit points, delivered across a semester or trimester calendar. You can expect core units in procurement strategy and contract management, with assessment built around real sourcing problems rather than exams alone. If you later want to continue, the credit points you earn here can usually be counted towards a graduate diploma or master's in the same field, subject to the receiving course's rules.
You learn to write a specification that suppliers can actually respond to, evaluate tenders on more than price, structure a contract that protects your organisation, and manage a supplier relationship past the signing date. You also get practice in the analytical side, total cost of ownership, spend analysis, risk registers, and in the ethical and regulatory rules that apply to procurement in Australia, including probity in public sector tendering. These are the skills employers ask for when they advertise procurement and contract roles.
This course fits procurement officers, contract administrators, project coordinators and supply chain staff who want to move up, and also people from finance, engineering or operations who now find themselves responsible for buying. Study is available to international students, who can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session and may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after graduating. Confirm entry requirements, unit lists, fees and intakes on the official course page, and check the CRICOS register for current details.
Australian employers in these fields include federal, state and local government agencies, hospitals and health services, mining and resources companies, construction contractors, defence suppliers and large retailers.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$13,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
