The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical, hands-on qualification for people who want to run the show, a restaurant floor, a hotel department, a function centre, a licensed club. It's a diploma-level course on the Australian Qualifications Framework, delivered over 1.5 years by the Queensland International Business Academy. That's a shorter, more focused pathway than a bachelor degree, and it's built around the skills employers actually ask for in Australian hospitality: rostering, budgeting, stock control, food and beverage service, compliance with liquor and gaming rules, and leading a team through a busy service.
You study units of study, each carrying credit points, usually delivered across semesters or trimesters. Assessment is competency-based, you demonstrate you can do the task, not just write about it. Expect a mix of classroom theory and practical work in training kitchens, bars and simulated service environments, plus a work placement component where you apply what you've learned in a real venue. Many providers arrange placements with hotels, restaurants and catering organisations, and the hours count toward your qualification. Ask the academy how placement is organised and whether it is paid or unpaid.
What you actually learn: how to manage operational budgets, recruit and induct staff, manage diversity, prepare and monitor budgets, control stock and purchasing, plan and implement service, and handle the legal side of serving alcohol and gambling responsibly. You'll also cover marketing, customer service strategy, and how to deal with complaints and conflict without losing your cool. These are the everyday skills that separate a supervisor from a manager.
This course suits two kinds of people. One is the international student who wants an Australian qualification and a practical career pathway without committing to a three-year degree. The other is someone already working in hospitality, in a café, a pub, a hotel, who wants formal recognition and a step up into a supervisory or management role. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. Check the current rules with the Department of Home Affairs, because they change.
English requirements: international applicants need to show English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for undergraduate and coursework postgraduate courses, but this is a diploma-level course, so check the exact requirement with the academy. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, you need to meet both. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 112224H. Confirm all details, including intake dates and fees, on the official page.
Australian industries that hire: hotels and resorts, restaurants and catering companies, licensed clubs and pubs, event and conference venues, tourism operators, and aged care or hospital food service. Queensland's tourism regions, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Cairns and the Whitsundays, are steady employers, and the skills transfer to hospitality management roles overseas.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$30,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
