The Diploma of Human Resource Management is a practical qualification for people who want to work in HR or take on people-management responsibilities. It covers the core of the HR function: recruitment and onboarding, performance and feedback conversations, workplace relations and the Fair Work framework, work health and safety, payroll and record-keeping, and supporting a diverse workforce. You learn how to write position descriptions, run a selection process, handle a grievance, keep personnel files compliant, and give managers advice they can actually use.
This is an AQF diploma, usually delivered over three or four study periods across 1.5 years. It is made up of units of competency rather than the units of study and credit points you would see in a degree, and each unit has a credit value that counts towards the qualification. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can do the task to the standard the industry expects, through written tasks, case studies, role plays and projects. Many providers include a work placement or simulated workplace component so you practise the real thing, sitting in on a recruitment panel, drafting a policy, or helping with an induction, before you finish. Check the official course page and the CRICOS register for the exact unit list, delivery mode and placement arrangements.
You finish with the day-to-day skills HR officers use: interpreting awards and enterprise agreements, advising on leave and entitlements, coordinating recruitment, maintaining HR information systems, contributing to performance management, and supporting workplace change. You also build the softer side, listening, asking good questions, writing clearly, and keeping confidentiality when it matters. These are the skills that make you useful in a small business with no dedicated HR team, or as part of a larger HR group.
It suits school leavers who want a direct route into an office role, people already working in administration, payroll or team leadership who want to formalise their experience, and career changers who need a recognised Australian qualification quickly. It also provides a pathway into higher study, you may be able to get credit towards a bachelor degree in business or human resource management, depending on the receiving institution's rules. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Entry requires English proficiency; check the official page for the exact test scores and any other requirements.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
