The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification for people who want to run hospitality operations rather than just work in them. You cover the practical side, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office, food safety, responsible service of alcohol, alongside the business side: rostering, budgeting, stock control, marketing, human resources and compliance with Australian licensing and workplace laws. The later stages focus on management: leading teams, handling complaints, planning events, and analysing financial reports to see where a venue is making or losing money.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points. A full-time load is usually four units per semester, with two semesters a year, though some providers run three trimesters. Assessment is competency-based: you either demonstrate the skill to the standard or you don't, and you can be reassessed. Most courses include a work placement or industry experience component, because hospitality management can't be learned from a textbook, you need time on the floor during service, in the kitchen pass, or behind the front desk of a hotel. Confirm the exact unit list, placement hours and delivery mode on the official CRICOS entry and the provider's page.
You learn to write a roster that actually covers a Friday night, cost a menu, manage a cellar or stockroom, deal with a difficult customer without escalating the situation, and brief a team before service. You also pick up the administrative habits that hospitality managers need: reading a profit and loss statement, understanding wage budgets, keeping records for health inspectors, and managing suppliers. Communication matters as much as the technical skills, you'll be explaining rosters to casual staff and answering to an owner or general manager.
This suits someone already working in hospitality who wants to move into a supervisory or duty manager role, or a student who wants a practical qualification rather than a three-year bachelor degree. It also works for people changing careers into hotels, resorts, restaurants, clubs or event catering. The Australian hospitality industry hires constantly, and management-level staff are in demand across cities and regional areas. If you're an international student, a Student visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, which is useful for getting real industry hours while you study. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may allow you to stay and work, check the Department of Home Affairs for current requirements.
English proficiency is required for international applicants, typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent such as TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official page for the most current details on units, placement and entry requirements.
These roles exist across Australia in hotels, resorts, restaurants, bars, clubs, casinos, event companies, catering firms and tourism operators. Regional tourism areas and major city hospitality precincts both hire at management level. Some roles require additional state-based licences, such as responsible service of alcohol or gaming supervisor approvals.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
