The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work with young children in Australian early learning services. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it is more hands-on and job-focused than a degree, and shorter. You learn how children grow and develop from birth to five, how to plan and run a curriculum that suits each child, how to keep children safe and well, and how to work with families and other staff.
Assessment is practical. You will spend part of your time in a classroom or online learning the theory, and a big part of it on placement in a real early childhood service, where you work alongside qualified educators and get signed off on the skills you need. This is how Australian vocational qualifications work: units of study, each with a set number of credit points, and a requirement that you complete a minimum number of hours in a regulated service before you can be counted as qualified. The diploma is the level most Australian long day care centres and preschools ask for when they hire a room leader or an educator who can supervise others.
To get in, international applicants need to show English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the usual standard for coursework at this level, though some providers ask for a bit more. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. Note that the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa, so check both. While you study on a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, which many students use to pick up casual shifts in the sector.
This course suits people who like working with children and want to get into the workforce without committing to a three-year degree. It also suits people already working in childcare who need the formal qualification to move up. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available if you meet the requirements, letting you stay and work in Australia for a period. Confirm the current rules on the official page, since they change.
These roles are found across Australia in private childcare chains, community-managed centres, local council services, and school-based preschools. The sector is one of the largest employers in the country and demand for qualified staff is steady, particularly in regional areas.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
