The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification for people who want to run the show, a restaurant, a hotel department, an events team, a licensed club. It's practical from day one. You learn how hospitality businesses actually work: rostering and labour cost, food and beverage operations, stock and purchasing, budgeting, marketing, and the legal side of serving alcohol and keeping customers safe. Alongside that you build the supervisory and people skills that separate a manager from a good shift worker, leading a team, handling complaints, dealing with difficult customers, and keeping a venue compliant.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, each carrying credit points, and delivered across semesters or trimesters. That structure matters when you want to stack study later: an advanced diploma sits above a diploma and below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework, and many institutions give credit toward a bachelor degree for units you've already completed. Confirm the credit arrangements with the receiving university before you enrol. Most advanced diplomas include a work placement or industry-based component, and hospitality is a field where that placement is where the real learning happens, you'll be on the floor, in the kitchen pass, or behind the front desk, not just in a classroom.
What you graduate with is a set of skills an employer can use immediately: writing a roster that meets a wage budget, costing a menu, running a stocktake, managing a function from enquiry to pack-down, and supervising staff in line with Australian workplace law. Assessment is typically a mix of practical tasks, projects and written work rather than exams alone. If you're already working in hospitality, the placement and assessment tasks often overlap with your job.
This course suits a few types of people. School leavers who want a hands-on qualification and a fast route into supervisory work. International students who want an Australian qualification in an industry that hires continuously. And people already in the industry, duty managers, supervisors, chefs, who want formal recognition before stepping up. International students should check the official page for English requirements and current tuition, which is published on the CRICOS register under course code 119908A. On a student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, which is useful in hospitality, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream is worth investigating if you want to stay and work after you finish.
Hiring industries include hotels and resorts, restaurants and catering, clubs and pubs, event and venue management, and tourism operators. Many graduates also use the qualification as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in hospitality, business or tourism, with credit for units already completed.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$19,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
