The Diploma of Remedial Massage is a two-year, practical qualification for people who want to work as remedial massage therapists. You learn how the body moves and where it breaks down, then how to treat it with your hands. Expect anatomy and physiology, musculoskeletal assessment, palpation, and a long list of massage techniques, Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point, myofascial release, sports and pregnancy massage. You also study pathology and contraindications, because a remedial therapist needs to know when not to treat and when to refer on. Clinic subjects put you in a student clinic treating real clients under supervision, logging hours and building the case notes that become your working habit.
This is a diploma, not a degree. On the Australian Qualifications Framework it sits between a certificate IV and an associate degree, and it is delivered as a vocational course rather than a university semester model. The two years are usually split into study periods, some providers run semesters, some run rolling intakes, and you complete a set of units of study, each with a credit point value, rather than majors and electives. Assessment is competency-based: you either demonstrate the skill or you don't. There is no research thesis at this level, and no honours year. The capstone is the supervised clinical practice, where you accumulate treatment hours on real clients and are assessed on your hands-on work, your client handling and your record keeping.
You will be able to take a case history, run a physical assessment, form a treatment plan and carry it out. You will know the muscles, bones, joints and nerves well enough to reason about a client's shoulder or lower back rather than just rub where it hurts. You will be able to adapt pressure and technique for different bodies and different conditions, keep clinical notes that stand up to scrutiny, and run a small practice, bookings, fees, records, hygiene, informed consent. You will also learn the boundaries: when a presentation is outside your scope and needs a GP, physiotherapist or other health professional.
People who want to work with their hands and see clients one-to-one, often after a first career, often fitting study around a job. It suits school leavers too, though the anatomy load is real and you need to be comfortable touching strangers and discussing their bodies. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. When you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances, check the Department of Home Affairs rules yourself. The qualification is recognised for provider registration with the major massage associations, which is how most therapists get private health fund rebates for their clients. Melbourne College of Hair and Beauty and Melbourne College of Training & Assessment deliver this course; English entry is typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or an accepted equivalent, with the Student visa carrying its own separate English threshold. Confirm fees, intakes, English requirements and registration details on the official CRICOS page and with the provider before you enrol.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,800 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
