The Diploma of Cosmetic Tattooing is a one-year qualification for people who want to work as cosmetic tattoo artists. It covers the practical skills and the theory behind permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing: skin anatomy and physiology, infection control and hygiene, colour theory and pigment selection, needle and machine handling, client consultation and consent, pain management, and aftercare. You learn to design and tattoo eyebrows, eyeliner and lips, and you learn how to correct or remove previous work. The course also covers the business side, pricing, marketing, record keeping, and the legal and regulatory requirements that apply to skin penetration in Australia.
This is a diploma, which sits at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. It is delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two semesters or three trimesters depending on the provider's timetable. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Assessment is competency-based: you show you can perform the skills to the standard the industry expects, not just answer questions on paper. Most of your time is spent in supervised practical sessions on simulated skin and, where the provider arranges it, on models under supervision. Some providers include a work placement or clinic component so you build confidence with real clients before you finish.
By the end of the diploma you can consult with a client, assess their skin and any contraindications, choose pigments that suit their colouring, map and draw a shape that fits their face, and tattoo it cleanly and safely. You understand how to sterilise equipment, manage waste, and keep a workplace that meets public health requirements. You also learn how to handle complications, give clear aftercare instructions, and keep the records a business needs. Communication matters as much as technique, you are managing people's expectations about a result that lasts years.
This course suits people who want a hands-on career in the beauty industry and are prepared to work with fine detail. It also suits qualified beauty therapists, hairdressers or makeup artists who want to add cosmetic tattooing to their services, and career changers who are willing to build a client base from scratch. You do not need prior tattooing experience, but you do need steady hands, good eyesight, and the patience to practise the same stroke hundreds of times. International students should check the English requirement on the official page, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the CRICOS register and with the provider.
Hiring happens across the Australian beauty and personal services industry, salons, clinics, studios and mobile businesses, with demand strongest in capital cities and large regional centres. Many graduates eventually work for themselves, so business and client management skills carry weight alongside technique. Check licensing and local council requirements for skin penetration work in your state or territory before you start practising.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$13,500 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
