The Diploma of Community Services is a one-year Australian qualification for people who want to work directly with individuals, families and communities. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree, and is built around the practical skills community service organisations actually hire for: case management, client assessment, referral, advocacy, group work, and working within legal and ethical frameworks. You will study how to support people through housing stress, family breakdown, mental health challenges, disability, settlement, and other periods when they need a service system to work for them.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over one year of full-time study, split into two or three study periods depending on the provider. The course is made up of units of competency, each carrying credit points. You complete the units in a set sequence, with some core units everyone takes and electives that let you lean toward areas such as family support, youth work or community development. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, case studies, projects and observed practical work rather than exams alone.
Because community services is a hands-on field, the diploma includes a supervised vocational placement. You spend a block of time in an organisation such as a neighbourhood centre, family support service, homelessness service, aged care or disability provider, or a community health setting, working alongside paid staff. Placement is where the theory lands. You will practise intake interviews, keep case notes, attend team meetings and learn how referral pathways between agencies actually operate. Your provider arranges or approves the placement, and you will need to meet any checks the host organisation requires, such as a Working with Children Check or a police check.
By the end you should be able to assess a client's needs, develop and review a case plan, communicate with people in distress, work legally and ethically, maintain records, and collaborate with other services. You will also learn how to look after yourself in a job with high emotional demands, which is a real part of working in this sector.
This diploma suits school leavers who want a fast route into community work, career changers moving from retail, administration, care or customer service, and people already volunteering or working in the sector who want a recognised qualification. It also provides a pathway into a bachelor degree in social work or community services, with credit for prior study decided by the receiving institution. International students should confirm English requirements on the official page, since social work and community services often sit at the higher end of the IELTS scale. While studying in Australia on a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Always check the official course page for current units, placement arrangements and entry requirements.
These roles are found across the Australian not-for-profit sector, local and state government, health services, schools, and privately run care providers. Some graduates use the diploma as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in social work or community services.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,250 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
