The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical qualification for people who want to run hospitality operations, not just work in them. You cover food and beverage service, accommodation management, financial control, rostering and staff supervision, and the legal side of running a venue, responsible service of alcohol, food safety, workplace health and safety. Assessment is mostly hands-on. You plan and cost menus, manage a shift, deal with a difficult customer, balance a budget, and complete a capstone project that pulls the whole operation together. The course runs 26 weeks, so it suits students who want to get qualified and into work reasonably quickly rather than spend three years on a bachelor degree.
This is a VET qualification, not a university degree. It sits below the bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework. Delivery is in trimesters or semesters, depending on the timetable, and each unit carries credit points. You need to pass every unit, there is no partial credit for a half-finished one. Because it is shorter than a degree, the content is concentrated. You will be in class or on placement most weeks.
Work-integrated learning is built in. Hospitality employers expect you to have real service experience, so the course includes placement in hotels, restaurants, function centres or resorts. That placement is often where students get their first job offer. The skills you finish with are the ones employers ask about in interviews: how to lead a team through a busy service, how to control stock and costs, how to handle complaints without losing the customer or the staff member.
This suits people already working in hospitality who want to move into supervision or management, career changers who want a fast route into the industry, and international students who want an Australian qualification with a practical focus. English requirements for international applicants are usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, though the Student visa has its own separate English threshold set by the Department of Home Affairs. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available if you meet the requirements. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Check the official page for current details on units, placement and intake dates.
These roles are found across Australia in hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes, clubs, pubs, catering companies and event venues. The qualification also gives you credit towards further study in hospitality or business management if you decide to go on to a diploma or degree.
It typically takes 26 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
