A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a two-year postgraduate degree for people who want to run things, not just work in them. At Leaders Institute, the Australian Agribusiness Institute and the Australian Business Institute, the MBA is built around the core disciplines every manager needs: accounting, finance, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour, economics and strategy. You study how money moves through a business, how to read a balance sheet, how to price a product, how to manage a team that does not report to you, and how to decide what to do when the data is incomplete. Agribusiness students add the parts of the value chain that are specific to food and fibre, farm-gate economics, supply chains, export markets and the policy settings that shape Australian agriculture.
An Australian master's degree is normally one to two years full time and sits at level 9 on the Australian Qualifications Framework. This one runs for two years. You enrol in units of study, usually eight per year across two semesters or trimesters, with each unit worth a set number of credit points. You need to pass the required number of credit points to graduate. Most MBA programmes include a capstone unit in the final semester, a strategy project or a business research thesis where you take everything you have learned and apply it to a real organisation. Many also include a work-integrated learning component: an internship, a consulting project with an industry partner, or a placement with a business that needs a problem solved. Assessment is a mix of exams, assignments, group projects, presentations and class participation. Confirm the exact unit list, credit point rules and capstone options on the official course page.
You learn to write a business case that a board will read. You learn to forecast cash flow, build a budget, and explain why the numbers moved. You learn to lead people through change, negotiate with suppliers, and assess whether a new market is worth entering. Group work is heavy, because management is a team sport. You will present to your peers, defend your analysis, and get used to being challenged. If you take the agribusiness route, you also learn how Australian producers sell into Asia, how commodity prices are set, and how regulation affects what can be grown, moved and exported.
This degree suits people with a few years of work behind them who want to move into management, change industry, or formalise what they already know. It also suits recent graduates who want a business qualification on top of an undergraduate degree in something else, engineering, science, health, arts. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work in Australia. English requirements for entry are typically IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for coursework postgraduate degrees, though some institutions set higher. Check the official page for the exact requirement, tuition and intake dates.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$50,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
