The Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that trains you for supervisory and management roles in hotels, restaurants, resorts, catering companies and events businesses. You study how a hospitality operation actually runs: rostering and labour costs, food and beverage service, stock control, budgeting, marketing, legal compliance, and looking after guests from check-in to complaint resolution. Assessment is practical as much as written, so you spend time in training kitchens, simulated service areas and real commercial outlets. The course sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it is vocational and job-focused rather than academic in orientation.
Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to complete all required units to graduate. Many providers deliver the course over semesters or trimesters, with intakes at several points in the year. Your units will cover core management skills plus electives that let you specialise, for example in accommodation services, food and beverage, or event operations. The final stage often includes a capstone or integrated project where you plan and manage a hospitality activity from start to finish.
Work-integrated learning is a normal part of hospitality training in Australia. You may complete a set number of hours in a commercial kitchen, restaurant or hotel, supervised by industry staff. Some providers arrange placements; others expect you to find your own and have it approved. Either way, the hours count towards your qualification and give you something concrete to put on your resume.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that meets wage budgets, cost a menu, manage stock and suppliers, lead a team through a busy service, handle difficult customers, and keep the business compliant with food safety and liquor laws. You also learn to read financial reports and make decisions from them. Communication matters as much as technical skill, you will deal with staff, guests, suppliers and regulators.
This course suits people who want to move into hospitality management without committing to a three-year bachelor degree, or who already work in the industry and need a formal qualification for promotion. International students often use it as a pathway into Australian hospitality work. If you are already a supervisor or team leader, the advanced diploma can formalise what you have learned on the job.
English requirements for international applicants are set by the institution and by the Department of Home Affairs for the Student visa. The published standard for courses at this level is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with equivalents accepted through TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced or the provider's own English programmes. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current tuition, intake dates and exact entry requirements. While studying, a Student visa generally allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream.
Australian employers in tourism, accommodation, food service, clubs, pubs and events hire advanced diploma graduates into these roles. The qualification also gives you credit towards further study, such as a bachelor degree in hospitality or business, if you decide to continue.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$25,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
