The Undergraduate Certificate of Business (Sports Management) is a short qualification that introduces you to how sport is run as a business. You'll look at the commercial side of clubs, leagues, events and athlete management: marketing and sponsorship, event operations, finance basics, and the rules and governance that shape Australian sport. It's the kind of course you take when you want a taste of the industry before committing to a full degree, or when you're already working in sport and want formal grounding in the business side.
The certificate runs 35 weeks. Australian qualifications are built from units of study, each with a credit point value, and delivered across semesters or trimesters. This certificate is made up of a small set of units, enough to give you a recognised qualification without the length of a three-year bachelor degree. You'll be assessed through assignments, case studies and exams rather than a research thesis, that comes later if you progress to honours or postgraduate study. The AQF sets the levels: a bachelor degree is normally three years, an honours year adds one, a master's is one to two, and a doctorate three or more. This certificate sits below the bachelor degree and can act as a stepping stone into one.
Expect to cover sports marketing, event management, business communication, and an introduction to accounting and finance. You'll practise planning an event, building a sponsorship proposal, and reading a budget. Some units include work-integrated learning or a placement with a club, association or event organiser, which is common in sports management because the industry hires on demonstrated experience as much as on paper. You'll also build the writing, presentation and teamwork skills that transfer to any business role.
This course suits school leavers who aren't ready for a three-year degree, people changing careers into sport, and volunteers or part-time staff at community clubs who want to move into paid administration. It also suits international students who want an Australian qualification before deciding on a longer programme. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and after completing the certificate you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your visa circumstances. Entry usually requires English proficiency, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current fees, intakes and unit details.
