A Graduate Certificate of Accounting is a short postgraduate qualification for people who want accounting knowledge without committing to a full master's degree. At this level it usually runs as a single semester or trimester of full-time study, or the equivalent part-time. This one is delivered over 35 weeks. You study a set of core units, typically financial accounting, management accounting, business law, economics for business, and quantitative methods or business statistics. Each unit carries credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Some institutions let you credit the certificate towards a master's later, so it can work as a stepping stone rather than a dead end.
Assessment is a mix of exams, assignments, case studies and group work. You will prepare financial statements, analyse cost behaviour, work through journal entries and reconciliations, and get to grips with the accounting standards and tax rules that apply in Australia. Expect spreadsheets, accounting software and a fair amount of reading. The teaching is practical, the point is to make you useful in an accounting team, not just able to recite theory.
Who it suits: people with a bachelor's degree in something else who are changing careers, overseas-trained accountants who need Australian context, and business owners or managers who want to understand the numbers. It also suits students who are not ready to commit to a two-year master's and want to test the water first. If you have already done an accounting major, this will largely repeat what you know.
Entry usually requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent, though some providers accept relevant work experience. International applicants need to meet English requirements, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 116751H. Confirm current entry requirements, unit lists and fees with the institution before you apply.
Graduates work across public practice firms, corporate finance teams, government departments, banks and financial services, and not-for-profit organisations. Many use the certificate as a pathway into further study or towards professional accounting body membership.
It typically takes 35 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$17,920 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
