The Bachelor of Business (International Tourism) is a three-year degree built around how tourism actually works in Australia and overseas. You study the business side of travel: destination marketing, visitor economy planning, tour operations, airline and hotel distribution, event tourism, and the economics of why people travel and where they spend. Early units cover accounting, marketing, management and business law, the same core any business student takes. Later units specialise in tourism systems, sustainable destination management, and the cultural and environmental factors that shape visitor experiences.
Australian bachelor degrees are made up of units of study, each worth a set number of credit points. You normally take eight units a year across two semesters (some institutions run three trimesters), and you need to pass a set total of credit points to graduate. The first year is broad business foundations. The second year moves into tourism-specific subjects and usually includes an elective or two you can take from other business areas. The final year often includes a capstone unit, a live industry project or a research-based assignment where you apply what you have learned to a real tourism operator, destination or event. Many tourism degrees also include a work-integrated learning placement or internship, because the industry hires on experience as much as grades.
You learn to read a tourism market: who is travelling, why, what they will pay for, and how to reach them. You work with industry data, build marketing plans, cost out tours or events, and study the policy and planning frameworks that govern destinations. Group projects are common, and you will practise presenting to industry-style briefs. Assessment is a mix of exams, reports, presentations and practical projects. By the end you should be able to put together a business case for a tourism product, analyse a destination's strengths and weaknesses, and manage the operational side of a visitor experience.
This degree suits school leavers who want a business qualification with a clear industry focus, and people already working in hospitality, travel or events who want to move into management. It also works for students who want an internationally portable business degree, tourism is one of the few sectors where the skills transfer across countries without much translation. If you like the idea of a career that mixes commercial thinking with people, places and travel, this is a direct route in.
Australia's tourism sector is a major employer, and Sydney is one of the country's main gateways for international visitors. That means guest lecturers, site visits and placement opportunities are often close at hand. The qualification sits on the Australian Qualifications Framework at bachelor level. International students on a Student visa can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and graduates may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, which lets you stay and work after you finish. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for this kind of degree, though some institutions set higher. Confirm the exact tuition, intake dates and English requirements on the official CRICOS listing and the institution's own page before you apply.
Typical employers include tour operators, destination marketing organisations, hotels and resorts, airlines, event management companies, government tourism bodies, and travel technology businesses.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$105,600 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
