The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work directly with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You study how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a play-based curriculum, how to keep children safe, and how to work with families and other educators. The course sits at diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which puts it above a certificate III and below a bachelor degree. It is the qualification most Australian long day care centres and preschools expect when they hire a room leader or lead educator.
Delivery is normally full time over one year, split into two semesters or three study periods depending on how the provider timetables it. You enrol in units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, and you need to pass every unit to graduate. Core units cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, legal and ethical requirements, and working with culturally diverse families. A large part of the diploma is practical. You complete a professional placement in a registered early childhood service, usually several weeks in total, where you work alongside qualified educators, take responsibility for small groups of children, and write observations and learning stories that go into a child's portfolio. Assessment mixes written tasks, projects, direct observation of your work with children, and a logbook signed off by your supervisor.
By the end you can design and run a daily programme that follows the Early Years Learning Framework, respond to children's interests and needs, manage behaviour in ways that support development, and meet the National Quality Standard and the Education and Care Services National Regulations. You also learn to communicate with parents, keep accurate records, and work as part of a team. These are the skills that let you step into a room and be counted in the staffing ratios from day one.
The diploma suits school leavers who want a practical career with children, career changers coming from retail, administration or aged care, and people already working in the sector as certificate III educators who want to move into a lead educator or room leader role. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English proficiency is required for entry; the published standard for this level is IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Tuition is listed on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm current fees, intake dates and placement arrangements on the official page.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$24,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
