The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is a one-year qualification for people who want to run building projects, not just work on them. You learn how to plan and supervise residential and commercial construction, read and interpret plans and specifications, estimate costs, prepare tenders, and manage contracts. There is a strong focus on the Building Code of Australia, work health and safety, structural principles, and site management. You also cover business side of things: leading teams, managing finances, and dealing with clients and subcontractors.
This diploma is delivered over one year of full-time study. Like most Australian vocational qualifications, it is made up of units of competency, each with a set credit value. You will typically study a mix of core and elective units across two or three study periods. Assessment is practical: assignments, project work, and sometimes a simulated building project where you apply what you have learned to a real or hypothetical site. There is no thesis at this level. If your course includes work-integrated learning, it will be a placement or industry project arranged by the institute.
Graduates come out knowing how to prepare a construction budget, schedule trades, interpret building plans, and keep a site compliant. You will learn to manage risk, resolve disputes, and communicate with everyone from clients to council officers. The skills are hands-on and directly transferable to the job. You will also pick up the administrative side: applying for permits, managing progress claims, and keeping records that stand up to audit.
This course suits people already working in construction who want to move into supervision or site management, as well as career changers with some trade or technical background. It is also a pathway to further study, such as a bachelor degree in construction management, with credit for your diploma units. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while you study, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Always check the official CRICOS page for the most up-to-date information on fees, intake dates, and English requirements.
These roles are in demand across Australia's residential, commercial, and civil construction industries. Employers include building companies, subcontractors, government agencies, and property developers. The diploma also gives you a head start if you want to run your own building business.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
