The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a one-year qualification for people who want to lead learning and development inside organisations. It sits at the graduate level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means you come in with a bachelor degree or relevant work experience and build on it. You study how adults learn, how to design training that actually changes what people do at work, and how to measure whether it worked. The course is built around the kind of problems learning managers face every day: a team that needs to lift its safety performance, a compliance requirement that has to be rolled out across sites, a new system that nobody knows how to use yet.
Australian graduate diplomas are usually made up of eight units of study, each worth a set number of credit points, delivered over two semesters or three trimesters. At this level you would expect core units in learning theory, instructional design, assessment and evaluation, and managing the learning function, plus electives that let you go deeper into areas like e-learning, change management or coaching. Assessment is typically a mix of assignments, case studies, presentations and a work-based project rather than a single final exam. Some institutions include a capstone unit where you tackle a real learning problem for an employer and present your findings. Because this qualification is vocational in its focus, work-integrated learning is common: you may be asked to design and deliver a training session, evaluate an existing programme, or build a business case for a learning initiative in your own workplace. If you are not already working, the institution will help you find a placement or a simulated project.
The skills you pick up are practical. You learn to write learning outcomes that mean something, choose delivery methods that suit the audience, build assessment tools that are fair and valid, and use data to show whether a programme delivered a return. You also learn to manage budgets, brief subject matter experts, and keep learning records that satisfy auditors. Graduates often step into roles where they are the person others turn to when something needs to be taught, whether that is onboarding, compliance training, leadership development or technical upskilling. The qualification is recognised in Australia and can articulate into a master's degree with credit, depending on the institution.
This course suits a few types of people. You might be a trainer or assessor who wants to move from delivering courses to designing and managing them. You might be a human resources generalist who has ended up owning learning and development and wants proper grounding. You might be a manager in mining, health, construction, retail or government who has to get a workforce competent in something new. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common coursework-postgraduate standard, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced accepted as equivalents, and the Department of Home Affairs sets its own separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, a Student visa generally allows work of up to 48 hours per fortnight, and on completion you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register under course code 110504E. Check the official page for current unit lists, entry requirements and intake dates.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
