The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a practical, one-and-a-half-year qualification for people who want to work in hotels, restaurants, events, clubs or food and beverage operations. You learn how to run a shift, roster staff, control stock and costs, manage a budget, lead a team, and keep customers happy. Most of the training happens in a commercial kitchen or simulated service environment, so you spend time on the floor, not just in a classroom. Assessment is competency-based: you have to show you can actually do the task, not just write about it.
The diploma is made up of units of competency, each with a set credit value. You typically study full time over three or four semesters. Core units cover hospitality industry knowledge, work health and safety, customer service, operational planning, financial control, human resources, and managing diversity. You also choose elective units that let you specialise, for example in food and beverage, accommodation services, or event management. There is no separate honours year at diploma level; the qualification sits below a bachelor degree on the Australian Qualifications Framework. If you want to keep going, many students use the diploma as a pathway into a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism or business, often with credit for the units they have already completed.
Work-integrated learning is built into the diploma. You complete a set number of hours in a real hospitality workplace, a hotel, restaurant, cafe, catering company or events venue, where you apply what you have learned under supervision. The placement is arranged by the college or found with its help, and you are assessed on the job. This is how the industry works in Australia: employers want to see that you have already handled a busy service, dealt with a complaint, or balanced a till. The diploma also includes training in bar service, food safety, and responsible service of alcohol, which are standard requirements for anyone working in licensed venues.
This course suits people who are already working in hospitality and want a formal qualification to move into supervisory or management roles. It also suits school leavers who want a hands-on career rather than a three-year degree, and international students who want an Australian qualification that leads directly to work. You need to be comfortable on your feet, good with people, and willing to work evenings and weekends, that is when hospitality happens. English proficiency is required for international applicants; the college publishes its accepted tests and scores, and the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the student visa. While you study, your visa usually allows you to work up to 48 hours per fortnight, which is a good way to get local experience. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Always check the official CRICOS register and the college's own page for the current unit list, tuition, intake dates and English requirements.
Australian industries that hire diploma graduates include hotels and resorts, restaurants and cafes, pubs and bars, clubs, event and conference venues, catering companies, airlines, and aged care and hospital food services. The qualification is recognised nationally and is a common entry point for supervisory roles in a sector that employs hundreds of thousands of people across Australia.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$20,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
