The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a one-and-a-half-year course for people who want to lead learning and development inside organisations. It sits at graduate diploma level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it's a step above a bachelor degree but shorter than a master's. You'll study how adults learn, how to design and evaluate training programmes, how to manage a registered training organisation (RTO) or a learning function in a company, and how to use data to improve what you deliver. The course also covers the compliance side of vocational education in Australia, the standards an RTO has to meet, how to keep quality up, and how to lead a team of trainers and assessors.
Australian graduate diplomas are usually made up of units of study, each with a credit point value. You need to pass a set number of credit points to graduate. At this level, that's typically eight to ten units taken over three semesters or four trimesters, depending on how the college timetables it. Some institutions run two semesters a year; others use three trimesters so you can finish faster or spread the load. The course may include a capstone unit where you pull everything together, often a workplace project or a major assignment that asks you to solve a real learning problem. Because this is a management qualification in the learning field, you should expect practical assessment: designing a training plan, running a session, reviewing an RTO's compliance, or building a business case for a learning programme. Work-integrated learning or a placement may be part of the course, so check the official page for details.
You'll come out able to analyse what an organisation needs its people to know, then build training that closes the gap. That means skills in instructional design, assessment and moderation, adult learning theory, change management, budgeting for learning, and leading a team. You'll also learn the Australian regulatory side, the Standards for RTOs, the VET Quality Framework, and how to prepare for an audit. If you're already working in training, this gives you the language and the framework to move into a management role. If you're new to the field, it gives you a recognised Australian qualification to enter it.
This course suits trainers, assessors, HR people, and team leaders who want to run learning and development rather than just deliver it. It also suits people from other industries, health, business, community services, who've ended up responsible for training staff and now want a formal qualification. Because it's a graduate diploma, you normally need a bachelor degree or equivalent, or relevant work experience. English requirements are IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, or an accepted equivalent like TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. The Department of Home Affairs sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, so check both. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) after you finish. Confirm all details, including tuition, on the official CRICOS page.
These roles exist across Australian industries: vocational education and training, corporate learning and development, government, health, community services, and defence. Many graduates move into management within an existing organisation, or set up their own training consultancy.
It typically takes 1.5 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$18,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
