This graduate diploma is for people who already work in learning and development, training, or education support and want to move into management. Over two years you study how organisations plan, deliver and assess training, how to lead a team of trainers, and how to design programmes that meet industry and regulatory standards. Expect units on adult learning principles, assessment and evaluation, resource management, and compliance with the Australian vocational education and training (VET) system. You will look at how to build a learning culture, manage budgets and contracts, and use data to improve what happens in the classroom or on the job site. The course is practical and assumes you bring experience to the room.
Australian graduate diplomas sit at AQF level 8, between a bachelor degree and a master's. They usually take one to two years of full-time study. This one is two years. You enrol in units of study, each with a credit point value, and you need to pass a set number to graduate. Teaching runs in semesters or trimesters, depending on the intake. Many graduate diplomas include a capstone unit or a work-based project where you apply what you have learned to a real organisation. If the course has a placement or work-integrated learning component, it will be listed in the course structure, check the official page for the exact units and any professional experience requirements.
You will learn to write training plans that meet the Standards for Registered Training Organisations, lead assessment validation, manage a training budget, and report on learner outcomes. You will also cover how to support diverse learners, including those from non-English-speaking backgrounds and people with disabilities. Group work and case studies are common. Assessment is usually a mix of reports, portfolios, presentations and practical tasks. By the end, you should be able to step into a coordinator or manager role and take responsibility for a training function.
This is a good fit if you have a certificate IV in training and assessment, a bachelor degree in education or a related field, or several years working as a trainer or assessor and you want to supervise others. It also suits people from industry who now train staff and want a formal qualification in learning management. International students should note the English requirement: IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework postgraduate courses, though some fields ask for higher. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa. While studying, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm all details, including unit lists and placement requirements, on the official page.
These roles exist across Australia in RTOs, TAFEs, universities, government departments, and large private companies that run their own training academies.
