The Diploma of Hospitality Management is a two-year qualification that prepares you for supervisory and management roles in hotels, restaurants, catering companies, and event venues. You'll study how a hospitality business actually runs: rostering and labour costs, food and beverage operations, stock control, budgeting, customer service standards, workplace health and safety, and the legal side of serving alcohol and managing staff. Assessment is practical as well as written, so you'll spend time in training kitchens, simulated service environments, and on placement in real venues.
Australian diplomas sit at Level 5 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree but above a certificate III or IV. This one runs over two years, usually across four or six study periods depending on whether the provider uses semesters or trimesters. You complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all core units plus a number of electives to graduate. Many diplomas build in a work placement unit, and hospitality is a field where that placement is genuinely useful, you'll be on the floor or in the kitchen, not just reading about it. Some providers also offer a pathway into a bachelor degree with credit for your diploma units, so ask about articulation arrangements if you want to keep studying.
By the end you should be able to write a roster that meets a wage budget, handle a customer complaint without escalating it, run a stocktake, read a profit and loss statement for a food and beverage outlet, and supervise a team through a busy service. You'll also cover compliance: responsible service of alcohol, food safety, and the employment rules that apply to casual and part-time hospitality staff. These are the skills that get people promoted from waiting or bar work into duty manager and venue supervisor roles.
This diploma suits people already working in hospitality who want to move into management, career changers who want a practical qualification rather than a three-year degree, and international students looking for a course with a strong work-integrated learning component. If you're an international applicant, you'll need to meet the English requirement, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, your visa allows 48 hours of work per fortnight, which is how many students fund part of their living costs and gain local experience. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check the official course page for current fees, intake dates, and unit lists, as these can change.
These roles exist in every Australian city and in regional tourism areas, and hospitality is one of the largest employing industries in the country. Many graduates also use the diploma as a stepping stone into a bachelor degree in hospitality, tourism, or business management, with credit for the units they've already completed.
It typically takes 2 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$36,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
