The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a one-year qualification for people who want to work directly with children from birth to five years in Australian early learning services. You learn how children grow and learn, how to plan and run a programme that suits each child, how to keep them safe, and how to work with their families. The course is practical from the start, you spend time in real services, not just in a classroom, and you finish ready to take responsibility for a room of children.
The diploma is built around units of study, each with a set credit point value. You cover child development, curriculum planning, health and safety, nutrition, inclusion and working with families and communities. There is a strong focus on the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework, because these are the rules and the guide that every Australian early childhood service follows. Assessment is a mix of written work, projects, and observed tasks in a real workplace.
This is an AQF diploma, which sits between a certificate III and a bachelor degree. It is normally delivered over one year of full-time study, often across two or three study periods rather than the semesters you might see in a degree. The amount of classroom time varies, but the course includes a set number of hours of work placement, where you are supervised in a licensed early childhood service. That placement is where you practise routines, guide behaviour, document children's learning, and learn how a real service runs day to day. Check the official page for the exact placement hours and the structure of the study periods.
You learn to observe children and use what you see to plan experiences that stretch them. You learn to set up environments that are safe and interesting, to manage groups, to respond to illness and injury, and to talk with families about their child's progress. You also learn the legal and ethical side, mandatory reporting, child protection, workplace health and safety, and the rights of children and families. By the end, you can lead a room and supervise other educators.
This diploma suits people who want to work with young children and take on more responsibility than a certificate III allows. It suits career changers, people already working in the sector who want to move up, and international students looking for a qualification that is recognised across Australia. If you plan to study in Australia on a student visa, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available after you finish, depending on your circumstances. English requirements for international applicants are set out on the official page and by the Department of Home Affairs for the visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Always confirm the current details on the official course page before you apply.
These roles are found in long day care centres, community preschools, kindergartens, family day care schemes, and outside school hours care services across Australia. The diploma also gives you a pathway into further study, such as a bachelor degree in early childhood education, which can lead to teaching registration.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$16,250 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
