Master of Social Work (Qualifying)

Charles Darwin University's Master of Social Work (Qualifying) is for graduates who want to practise as social workers in Australia. Over two years of full-time study, you’ll take core units in social work theory, methods, ethics, mental health, child protection, Indigenous perspectives, and community work. The course is structured over four semesters and includes coursework and supervised field placements as required by professional standards in Australia.

Students complete prescribed units of study, each earning credit points contributing towards the full award. A distinct feature of this program is the work-integrated learning, with two placements in a variety of social work settings. These total at least 1,000 hours, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in the field – for example, with government agencies, non-profits, Indigenous organisations, or health services in the Northern Territory and beyond.

Learning is underpinned by Australian social work practice. Students gain skills in assessment, intervention, advocacy, and research, with a focus on ethical and culturally responsive practice, especially when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This pathway is suited to students who hold a bachelor’s degree in another discipline and want to meet Australian professional registration requirements as a social worker.

International applicants need to evidence English proficiency, typically an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 for social work, or equivalent recognised English tests. Graduates often find roles across health services, social service agencies, non-government organisations, and governmental departments throughout Australia. With the qualification meeting Australian standards, graduates are eligible to apply for membership of the AASW. Eligible graduates can consider the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. International students are permitted to work up to 48 hours per fortnight while enrolled.
