The Graduate Diploma of Management (Learning) is a one-year qualification for people who want to lead the design, delivery and improvement of learning in organisations. It sits at graduate level on the Australian Qualifications Framework, so it assumes you already hold a bachelor degree or have substantial industry experience. You will study how adults learn, how to build curricula that actually get used, how to assess whether learning has happened, and how to manage the compliance and quality side of a training organisation. Expect units on learning theory, instructional design, assessment principles, educational leadership, and the Australian vocational education and training regulatory environment.
The course runs over one year of full-time study, usually split into two semesters or three trimesters depending on intake. Each unit carries a set credit point value, and you need to pass the required number of units to graduate. Assessment is mostly practical: designing a unit of competency, building an assessment tool, running a small training project, and writing a report on the results. Some providers include a capstone project where you work with a real organisation to solve a learning problem. Work-integrated learning or a placement in a training or HR team is common in this field, so ask the institution how it is arranged.
Skills you pick up include writing learning outcomes, choosing delivery methods for different audiences, using the Standards for Registered Training Organisations, managing trainer teams, and evaluating whether a program was worth the money. You also learn to handle the paperwork that keeps an RTO compliant. These are the skills employers ask for when they hire learning and development managers, VET coordinators, and instructional designers.
This course suits trainers who want to move into management, HR professionals who look after staff capability, teachers moving into adult education, and people from industry who now train others and need a formal credential. It also works as a stepping stone to a master's degree. If you are an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream after you finish. English entry is usually IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 overall, though teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work ask for 7.0 to 7.5. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the institution's own English programs are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Always confirm current fees, intakes and unit lists on the official page.
Australian industries that hire these roles include vocational education and training, government, health, defence, banking and finance, retail, hospitality, and mining and resources. Some graduates go on to a master's degree or a research pathway.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$10,200 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
