This diploma prepares you to work as an early childhood educator in Australia, typically with children from birth to five years. You'll study how children learn and develop, how to plan and run educational programmes, and how to keep them safe and well. The course covers child development, curriculum and pedagogy, health and safety, working with families and communities, and the legal and ethical side of the job. You'll also learn about inclusion, diversity, and how to support children with additional needs.
The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a vocational qualification at AQF level 5, usually delivered over one year full time. It's made up of units of competency, each with a set number of credit points, and most providers run it across two or three study periods. A big part of the course is practical: you'll complete a work placement in a registered early childhood service, where you'll work with children under supervision and build up your hours. Some providers offer a mix of online theory and face-to-face placement, which suits people already working in the sector or living away from campus.
You'll come out knowing how to observe children and document their learning, design play-based experiences, manage routines and transitions, and respond to incidents and emergencies. You'll also practise communicating with families, working in a team, and following the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework. The qualification meets the minimum requirement for many educator roles in long day care, preschools and family day care. If you want to go further, you can use it as a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education, with credit for your studies.
This course suits people who want to start working with young children fairly quickly, career changers, and those already in the sector who need a formal qualification to move into a lead educator or room leader role. It's also a good fit if you're thinking about teaching later but want to test the water first. English requirements for international students are usually IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall, but check with your provider because some courses ask for higher. While you study, your visa lets you work up to 48 hours per fortnight during term. After you finish, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Always confirm fees, intake dates and English requirements on the official CRICOS page or with the college directly.
These roles are in demand across Australia, especially in growing suburbs and regional areas. Employers include private and community childcare chains, local councils, not-for-profit organisations, and government-funded preschools. The diploma also gives you a pathway into a bachelor degree in early childhood education if you want to become a registered teacher.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$12,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
