The Diploma of Leadership and Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to step into team leader, supervisor or middle-management roles, or who already hold one and want the paperwork to match. It sits at the diploma level of the Australian Qualifications Framework, which means it's practical and job-focused rather than academic. You'll study how to manage budgets and financial plans, lead and motivate a team, build business relationships, manage risk, and plan and implement operational change. The coursework leans on real workplaces, so expect case studies, group projects and assessments built around situations you'd actually face on the floor.
Australian diplomas are usually delivered over two or three study periods a year, and this one runs for a full year. You'll complete a set number of units of study, each carrying credit points, and you need to pass all of them to graduate. Some providers build in a work placement or industry project; where that applies, it's part of the course requirements and you'll be told before you enrol. Assessment is a mix of written tasks, presentations, role plays and practical projects. There's no thesis at diploma level, but you may complete a capstone-style project that pulls together what you've learned across the units.
By the end you should be able to run a team meeting that finishes on time with decisions made, write a budget that survives contact with reality, handle a difficult staff situation without escalating it, and explain a change plan to people who don't want to hear it. Those sound basic. They're not, and they're what employers keep saying they can't find. You'll also pick up the administrative side of management: rostering, performance reviews, compliance with workplace policies, and reporting to senior managers.
This diploma suits someone already working in a supervisory or team leader role who wants formal recognition, a recent school leaver who wants a fast route into management rather than a three-year degree, or an international student looking for a shorter qualification with a clear vocational outcome. If you're an international applicant, you'll need to meet the English requirement published for this course. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for coursework programs, with TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the provider's own English programmes accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, which is separate from the college's entry requirement. On a Student visa you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. After you finish, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available depending on your circumstances. Check the official CRICOS listing and the provider's page for current tuition, intake dates and entry details before you apply.
Graduates often use the diploma as a stepping stone into a bachelor's degree in business or management, with credit for completed units of study.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$12,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
