The Diploma of Veterinary Nursing is a practical qualification for people who want to work alongside veterinarians caring for animals. You'll study animal anatomy and physiology, how to handle and restrain animals safely, medical nursing, surgical nursing and anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging, pathology sample collection, and infection control. There's also the client side of the job, talking to pet owners, recording patient histories, and managing a clinic's day-to-day admin. Expect a lot of hands-on work: practising restraint techniques, preparing animals for surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, and assisting in consultations. Assessment is competency-based, meaning you have to show you can actually do the tasks, not just answer questions about them.
This diploma runs for 40 weeks. Australian vocational qualifications are built from units of competency, and you'll need to complete all the required units to graduate. Delivery usually combines classroom theory with simulated clinic work and placement in a real veterinary practice, where you'll work under supervision with actual patients. The mix of on-campus study and workplace hours is what makes the qualification employer-recognised. Confirm the exact unit list, delivery mode and placement requirements on the official CRICOS register and with Brisbane College of Australia directly.
By the end, you should be able to handle and restrain dogs, cats and other species calmly and safely, set up and maintain surgical areas, monitor anaesthetised patients, take and process diagnostic images, collect and prepare pathology samples, provide post-operative care, and communicate clearly with vets and owners. You'll also learn how to keep accurate clinical records and follow workplace health and safety and infection control procedures, the kind of habits that matter every single shift.
This course suits people who want to work directly with animals in a clinical setting and prefer hands-on learning over a long academic degree. It's a good fit if you're starting out in the field, changing careers, or already working in a clinic and wanting a formal qualification. If you're an international student, you'll need to meet the English requirement published for this course, IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common standard for courses at this level, though nursing-related fields sometimes ask for higher. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the college's own English programmes may be accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs also sets its own English threshold for the Student visa, separate from the college's requirement. While studying, a Student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight, and after graduating you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, check there and on the official page for current figures and entry details.
These roles are found across Australian veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, shelters, research facilities and animal welfare organisations. Employers include private practices, corporate veterinary groups, universities with veterinary teaching hospitals, and state or local government animal management services.
It typically takes 40 weeks, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$12,650 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
