About this program

The Advanced Diploma of Program Management is a one-year qualification for people who already have some project experience and want to move up to managing multiple projects at once. You'll learn how to set up and run programs, the groups of related projects that organisations use to deliver big changes. Subjects cover program scope, benefits management, stakeholder engagement, governance, risk, budgeting and resource allocation across projects. You'll also look at how to align programs with an organisation's strategic goals and how to report progress to senior management and boards.

How the qualification is structured

This is an AQF advanced diploma, which sits above a diploma and below a bachelor degree. It's delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two semesters or three trimesters. You'll complete a set of core units and some electives, with each unit carrying credit points. Assessment is practical, case studies, program plans, budgets, risk registers and presentations. Many programs include a capstone unit where you manage a simulated or real program from start to finish. Check the official CRICOS page for the exact unit list and credit points.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning is common in this field. You may complete a placement with an Australian organisation, or work on a live program under supervision. Some providers arrange industry projects with local businesses, government agencies or not-for-profits. These give you experience with real stakeholders, deadlines and budgets. If you're already working in project support, your current role might count towards placement requirements, ask the provider.

Skills you gain

You'll finish with the ability to develop program business cases, manage benefits realisation, lead program teams, handle competing priorities and communicate with executives. You'll also build skills in procurement, contract management and change control. These are the same skills program managers use in construction, IT, health, government and defence.

Who it suits

This course suits people who have completed a diploma or have several years of project experience and want formal recognition. It's also for team leaders, coordinators and project officers ready to step into program roles. If you're an international student, you can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while studying, and after you finish you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream. English requirements are IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall or equivalent, though some providers ask for higher. Confirm all details on the official page.

Entry requirements

English: International applicants must evidence English proficiency. IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall is the common undergraduate and coursework-postgraduate standard, rising to 7.0–7.5 for teaching, nursing, medicine, law and social work. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university’s own English programmes are accepted as equivalents; the Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself.
International students: Registered on CRICOS for international students. A Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for this course supports a Student visa (subclass 500) application; Overseas Student Health Cover is required for the full duration.
