The Diploma of Agribusiness Management is a one-year qualification for people who want to work in the business side of farming and rural enterprise. You'll study how agricultural operations make money, how to manage staff and resources, and how to plan for seasons, markets and risks that are outside anyone's control. Typical subjects cover farm business management, agricultural marketing, financial planning and budgeting, commodity supply chains, and the legal and regulatory side of primary production in Australia.
The diploma sits at the vocational end of the Australian Qualifications Framework, below a bachelor degree. It's delivered over one year of full-time study, usually across two semesters or trimesters, and you'll complete a set of units of study, each carrying credit points. Assessment is practical: case studies, farm business plans, budgets and industry projects rather than long exams. Many providers build in work-integrated learning, so you may spend time on a working property, at a saleyard, with an agribusiness lender or in a rural supply business. If you later want to continue to a bachelor degree, you may be able to get credit for the units you've completed, though the amount is decided by the receiving institution.
Skills you pick up include reading a balance sheet for a farm business, costing a crop or livestock enterprise, preparing a cash flow, negotiating supply contracts, understanding biosecurity and workplace safety obligations, and using farm management software. You also learn to talk to producers, bankers, agents and buyers, the communication side of agribusiness that often matters as much as the numbers.
This course suits school leavers who want a fast, practical entry into agriculture, people already working on the land who need business skills, and career changers moving into rural industries. It's also a pathway for international students who want Australian agricultural training. English requirements are set by the provider; for this level, an IELTS Academic score around 6.0 is typical, with TOEFL, PTE and Cambridge equivalents accepted. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself. While studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register. Confirm entry requirements, start dates and fees with Australian Vocational Training Academy or on the official CRICOS page before you apply.
Employers include farming enterprises, agricultural cooperatives, rural supply businesses, agtech companies, food processors, exporters, banks and government agriculture departments across Australia.
It typically takes 1 year, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$15,000 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
