The Bachelor of Ministry is a three-year degree for people who want to work in churches, faith-based organisations and community ministries. It sits at level 7 on the Australian Qualifications Framework, the same level as any other bachelor degree in Australia. You study full time over three years or part time over a longer period, and the course is registered on CRICOS for international students (course code 083084D).
The degree covers the core disciplines of ministry: biblical studies (Old and New Testament), theology, church history, pastoral care, preaching and worship, Christian ethics, and mission and evangelism. You also take units in leadership and organisation, which is what most ministry roles demand day to day. Teaching mixes lectures, tutorials, small-group work and supervised ministry practice. Assessment is usually a combination of essays, exegesis papers, sermons or ministry presentations, exams and a supervised field placement.
Australian bachelor degrees are built from units of study, each worth a set number of credit points. You need to pass a required number of credit points to graduate, typically 144 points over three years full time (roughly eight units a year). The academic year runs across two semesters, with some institutions offering a trimester option. Most ministry degrees include a capstone unit in the final year, often a supervised ministry project or a research essay that pulls together the biblical, theological and practical strands of the course. Field education or supervised ministry placement is standard in this field, because you cannot learn pastoral work from a textbook. Placements usually happen in a local church, a chaplaincy setting, a community service organisation or a mission agency, with a supervisor who reports on your practice.
You learn to read the Bible in its original context and apply it to contemporary life. You learn to preach and teach clearly, to lead a congregation or team, to counsel and refer people in crisis, to run services and programmes, and to think theologically about ethical and social questions. You also build the practical skills ministry employers ask for: public speaking, pastoral listening, conflict resolution, volunteer coordination, budgeting and governance. Graduates often say the placement is where the theory finally clicks.
This degree suits school leavers who are already active in a church and want to train for vocational ministry, and it suits mature-age students changing careers or stepping into a pastoral role after years of volunteering. It also works for people who want to serve in chaplaincy, missions, youth work or faith-based community development. If you are unsure whether you want ordination, a ministry degree still gives you transferable skills in communication, leadership and community work.
International applicants need to meet the university's English requirement, commonly IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall for undergraduate study. TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and the university's own English programmes are accepted as equivalents. The Department of Home Affairs sets a separate English threshold for the Student visa itself, so check both. While studying, a student visa generally allows up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during term. After graduating, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) post-study work stream may be available, depending on your circumstances. Tuition is published on the CRICOS register, and you should confirm fees, entry requirements, unit offerings and placement arrangements on the official course page before you apply.
It typically takes 3 years, with intakes in Semester 1 (Feb/Mar), Semester 2 (Jul).
Tuition is around A$81,288 total. Fees change yearly, confirm with an advisor.
